Statement on Mayor Zohran Mamdani's Rental Ripoff Hearings
First Hearing to Take Place February 26
(New York, NY) On Tuesday February 10, Mayor Zohran Mamdani released dates and times for a series of citywide “Rental Ripoff Hearings,” a public forum the administration says will allow tenants to air grievances and shape future housing policy.
Please attribute the following statement to New York Apartment Association CEO Kenny Burgos:
“It looks like the Mayor is taking governing advice from Donald Trump. Show trials may make good theater, but they don’t solve problems. They are a distraction. I think we are all exhausted of elected officials that are more focused on splashy events instead of actually making people’s lives better.”
”Renters with complaints should have their voices heard. But they should also be told the truth: thousands of buildings are being defunded by the government through overtaxation, nonsensical rent laws, and failing city agencies.”
”This is the kind of all show and no substance governing style many were worried this administration could become and if so it’ll be a disservice to renters and the bankrupt housing they live in.”
