NYAA Participates in Annual Turkey Giveaway
The event took place Saturday, September 23, at the Inwood food pantry.
(New York, NY) – On Saturday morning, the New York Apartment Association (NYAA) hosted its annual Turkey Giveaway event in Inwood today, distributing 500 turkeys to families in need across the neighborhood.
NYAA CEO Kenny Burgos was on hand to oversee the distribution and to show his continued commitment to supporting the Inwood community. “As the providers of the largest number of affordable housing in the city, our members understand the difficulties many tenants are dealing with. Supporting this food pantry year round and handing out 500 free turkeys ahead of Thanksgiving are just some of the ways we aim to support communities and be good neighbors.”
The event also had the honor of being attended by City Councilman Shaun Abreu, who praised the event and highlighted the significance of working together to address the pressing issues of food access and inequality in our communities.
“Food insecurity throughout Upper Manhattan and our city is prevalent, and we have to do everything we can to make sure we are literally putting food on the table for families that need it the most. So being here today with the New York Apartment Association to give these free turkeys to these families is going to make all the difference, and put a smile on their faces. And for that we are very grateful,” Abreu said.
Ismael Trinidad, the dedicated leader of the local food pantry, organized the food distribution. For the past ten years, he has been in charge of the pantry, providing a vital resource to the members of the community. It distributes fresh produce, canned goods, vegetables, juices, and other food items to roughly 500 families every Saturday.
“We have seen an increase in numbers because food stamps have gone down,” Trinidad said. “When the food stamps run out, many families need this food pantry to survive. This is why we are thankful for all our sponsors, and volunteers. And we always need more volunteers.”
The food pantry is supported year round by members of the NYAA, who pay the rent, help with food pickup, and regularly volunteer on Saturdays. If anyone wants to volunteer, they can contact the food pantry at (646)545-7696.
NYAA’s support of the food pantry is part of our broader mission to foster community connections, provide much needed support to families, and to come together as New Yorkers.
