NYC Council Approves Tenant Education & Outreach On Fire Safety.
The city council has enacted a Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York in relation to tenant education and outreach on residential vacate orders due to damage caused by fires, and it now awaits a signature from Mayor Eric Adams. Int.006A-2024 would require the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), in consultation with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) and Department of Buildings (DOB), to develop additional procedures to ensure that occupants of multiple dwellings are informed of the process for the issuance of residential vacate orders following fires. As we approach heating season and fire safety week, this legislation emphasizes the significance of fire safety measures and requirements.
Strengthening Fire Safety Bill Package
In addition to equipping tenants with greater fire safety prescriptive measures, the New York City Council recently approved Int.0089A-2024, a bill that would require an agency designated by Mayor Adams to provide notice to Council Members of certain fires occurring within their districts. The notification would need to be sent within three hours of FDNY deploying personnel to the scene of the fire, and would include detailed information relating to the hazard; date and time, the address of the fire, and details of the department’s emergency response. This is a necessary step toward increasing fire safety and awareness, with council members strengthening their outreach and greater pool of resources and aid for those affected by fires.
